다양한 인간 군상들의 모습이 이 좁은 방안에 펼쳐집니다. 유력해 보이는 사람에게 줄을 대 보려는 맥키씨, 속고 있는 줄도 모르는 맥키씨는 불쌍해 보입니다. 톰은 아무 거리낌없이 사기를 치고 있습니다. 정말 못되먹은 놈입니다.
캐더린은 머틀처럼 소문이야기, 남의 흠을 잡는 이야기에 열을 올리고 있고요. 맥키부인은 골이 바짝 나 있습니다. 캐러웨이는 이 속에서 도대체 무얼 하고 있는걸까하고 생각할 것 같습니다만....

She looked at me and laughed pointlessly.
그녀는 나를 쳐다보고는 어이없이 웃었다.
Then she flounced over to the dog, kissed it with ecstasy, and swept into the kitchen, implying that a dozen chefs awaited her orders there.
그리고 나서 그 강아지에게로 홱 뛰어가더니, 미친듯이 입을 맞추고는, 부엌으로 휙 들어가 버렸다. 마치 10여명의 요리사들이 거기서 그녀의 지시를 기다리기나 하는 양으로 말이다.
“I’ve done some nice things out on Long Island,” asserted Mr. McKee.
"롱아일랜드에서 멋진 작업을 했었죠." 맥키씨가 자신을 내세웠다.
Tom looked at him blankly.
톰이 무표정하게 그를 쳐다 보았다.
“Two of them we have framed down-stairs.”
"그 것중 두개가 아래층에 있습니다."
“Two what?” demanded Tom.
"둘? 어떤 것 말이야?" 탐이 물었다.
“Two studies. One of them I call MONTAUK POINT—THE GULLS, and the other I call MONTAUK POINT—THE SEA.”
"작품 두개가 있습니다. 하나는 <몬토크 갑- 갈매기>이고, 하나는 <몬토크 갑-바다>입니다."
The sister Catherine sat down beside me on the couch.
여동생 캐더린이 소파위 내 옆에 앉았다.
“Do you live down on Long Island, too?” she inquired.
"당신도 롱아일랜드에 사나요?" 그녀가 물었다.
“I live at West Egg.”
"웨스트에그에 삽니다"
“Really? I was down there at a party about a month ago. At a man named Gatsby’s. Do you know him?”
"정말요? 한 달전에 그곳에서 열리는 파티에 갔었어요. 개츠비라는 사람집 말이죠. 개츠비를 아세요?"
“I live next door to him.”
"제가 그 이웃에 삽니다."
“Well, they say he’s a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm’s. That’s where all his money comes from.”
"그래요. 개츠비씨는 빌헬름 황제의 조카라든가, 사촌이라든가 그러던데요. 그게 그의 돈줄이라던군요."
“Really?”
"정말요?"
She nodded.
그녀는 고개를 끄덕였다.
“I’m scared of him. I’d hate to have him get anything on me.”
"나는 그 사람이 무서워요. 그사람이 나에게 무엇이라도 알게 된다는 것이 싫어요."
This absorbing information about my neighbor was interrupted by Mrs. McKee’s pointing suddenly at Catherine:
갑자기 맥키부인이 캐더린에게 삿대질을 하는 바람에 나의 이웃에 대한 흥미로운 이야기가 중단되었다.
“Chester, I think you could do something with HER,” she broke out, but Mr. McKee only nodded in a bored way, and turned his attention to Tom.
"체스터, 저 여자 어떻게 좀 해봐요." 그녀가 분통을 터뜨렸다. 그러나 맥키씨는 따분한 듯이 고개만 끄덕이고는 톰에게 주의를 돌렸다.
“I’d like to do more work on Long Island, if I could get the entry. All I ask is that they should give me a start.”
"롱아일랜드에서 작업을 더 하고 싶습니다만, 제가 입회만 할 수 있다면 말입니다. 제가 요청하는 것은 다만 시작할 기회를 달라는 겁니다."
“Ask Myrtle,” said Tom, breaking into a short shout of laughter as Mrs. Wilson entered with a tray. “She’ll give you a letter of introduction, won’t you Myrtle?”
"머틀에게 말해보세요," 윌슨 부인이 쟁반을 들고 들어 올 때 가볍게 너털 웃음을 터트리면서 톰이 말했다. "당신 소개장을 하나 써 주지 그래?"
“Do what?” she asked, startled.
"뭐라고요?" 그녀는 무슨 뚱딴지 같은 소리냐며, 물었다.
“You’ll give McKee a letter of introduction to your husband, so he can do some studies of him.”
"맥키씨에게 당신 남편에게 보내는 소개장을 하나 써 주란 말이지. 그러면 그를 좀 연구할 수 있지 않겠어?"
His lips moved silently for a moment as he invented.
그는 잠깐 소리없이 입술을 달싹거리면서 거짓말을 꾸며내었다.
“GEORGE B. WILSON AT THE GASOLINE PUMP, or something like that.”
"<가솔린 주유소의 조지 B. 윌슨>, 뭐 더 좋은 제목없어."
Catherine leaned close to me and whispered in my ear: “Neither of them can stand the person they’re married to.”
캐더린은 나에게 가까이 몸을 기울이고는 귀속말을 했다. "두 사람 다 자기 아내와 남편에게 참을 수 없다는 거예요."
“Can’t they?”
"참을 수 없다고요?"
“Can’t STAND them.” She looked at Myrtle and then at Tom.
"그럼요, 참을 수 없다구요." 그녀는 머틀을 돌아 보고, 다시 톰을 돌아 보았다.
“What I say is, why go on living with them if they can’t stand them?
"무슨 말인가 하면요, 참을 수 없다면 왜 계속 같이 사느냐 하는 것이죠.
If I was them I’d get a divorce and get married to each other right away.”
나라면 당장 이혼하고 서로 결혼하고 말거예요."
“Doesn’t she like Wilson either?”
"언니는 윌슨을 좋아하지 않나요?"
The answer to this was unexpected.
대답이 예상치 못한 곳에서 왔다.
It came from Myrtle, who had overheard the question, and it was violent and obscene.
머틀이 부지중에 이 말을 듣고 격렬하게 쌍욕을 퍼부었다.
“You see,” cried Catherine triumphantly.
"봤죠," 캐더린이 의기양양하게 소리쳤다.
She lowered her voice again.
그녀는 다시 목소리를 낮추었다.
“It’s really his wife that’s keeping them apart. She’s a Catholic, and they don’t believe in divorce.”
"실제로 그들이 합하지 못하는 건 그의 아내때문이죠. 그녀는 카톨릭 신자예요. 그들은 이혼을 하지 않거든요."
