도전 ! 고전읽기

아주 흥미롭습니다. 아래 층에 사는 맥키 부부의 태도가 굉장히 암시적이네요. 맥키씨는 아주 사근사근하게 사람들을 대하죠. 반면에 아내는 맥키씨에게 끌려서 온 것처럼 부르퉁해 있는 듯 하고요. 맥키씨는 되도 않는 그의 사진으로 아마도 윌슨부인에게서 큰 돈을 뜯어 먹었던 것 같기도 하네요.

윌슨부인의 오만함은 하늘을 찌르고 맥키씨 부부의 아첨은 더욱 그녀를 부채질합니다. 그 순간 톰의 한 마디로 찬 물을 끼얹네요. 역시 돈을 가진 사람의 목소리가 크긴 크군요. 그 오만한 윌슨부인도 톰의 한 마디에 끽 소리도 하지 못합니다.

Mr. McKee was a pale, feminine man from the flat below.

맥키씨는 아래층에서 온 얼굴이 하얀 여성스러운 남자였다.

 He had just shaved, for there was a white spot of lather on his cheekbone, and he was most respectful in his greeting to every one in the room. 

광대뼈에 언뜻 보일듯 말듯한 하얀 거품만이 그가 막 면도를 했음을 보여주었다. 그는 방에 들어오면서 모두에게 아주 다정하게 인사를 건넸다.

He informed me that he was in the “artistic game,” and I gathered later that he was a photographer and had made the dim enlargement of Mrs. Wilson’s mother which hovered like an ectoplasm on the wall.

그는 나에게 "예술적인 놀이"를 한다고 말했는데, 내가 나중에 알게된 바로는 그는 사진사이며, 벽에 걸린, 윌슨 부인의 어머니의 모습이 희미하게 유령처럼 떠있는 흐릿하게 확대된 사진은 그의 작품이라는 것이었다.  

His wife was shrill, languid, handsome, and horrible. She told me with pride that her husband had photographed her a hundred and twenty- seven times since they  had been married.

그의 아내는 높은 목소리에는 걸맞지 않게 맥없이 처져보였으며, 잘 생긴 얼굴에는 죽을 상을 하고 있었다. 그녀는 나에게 결혼한 이후 백스물일곱번이나 남편의 사진 모델이 되었다고 자랑스럽게 말했다.

Mrs. Wilson had changed her costume some time before, and was now attired in an elaborate afternoon dress of cream-colored chiffon, which gave out a continual rustle as she swept about the room.

윌슨 부인은 이미 복장을 바꾸어, 지금은 비단으로 공들여 만든 얇은 크림색 드레스를 입고 있어서, 긴 드레스를 끌며 방을 다닐 때마다 옷 스치는 소리가 사각 사각 났다.  

With the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change.

그 드레스때문인지 그녀의 성격 또한 판이 하게 달려졌 있었다.   

The intense vitality that had been so remarkable in the garage was converted into impressive hauteur.

이전 차고에 있을 때 그토록 돋보였던 강렬한 생명력은 오히려 눈에 선연한 오만함으로 바뀌었다. 

 Her laughter, her gestures, her assertions became more violently affected moment by moment, and as she expanded the room grew smaller around her, until she seemed to be revolving on a noisy, creaking pivot through the smoky air.
그녀의 웃음, 몸짓, 주장은 시시각각으로 더 강렬해졌으며, 그녀가 점점 거대해지면서 그녀 주위의 공간은 점점 사라져 가고 마침내는 담배연기 자욱한 공기속에서 요란하게 삐꺽거리는 축을 중심으로 그녀만이 빙빙 돌아가고 있는 것처럼 보였다. 

“My dear,” she told her sister in a high, mincing shout, “most of these fellas will cheat you every time.

"내 사랑," 그녀는 고조된 목소리로 으스대며 여동생에게 소리쳤다. "사람들은 다 매번 널 속이려 들거야."

 All they think of is money.

그들은 오직 돈만 생각하지.

I had a woman up here last week to look at my feet, and when she gave me the bill you’d of thought she had my appendicitis out.”

지난 주에 한 여자가 내 발을 보려고 여기에 올라 왔지. 나에게 계산서를 내밀었을 때, 네가 생각하는 것처럼, 그녀는 나를 홀랑 벗겨먹으려 했어." 

“What was the name of the woman?” asked Mrs. McKee.

"그 여자 이름이 뭐였어요?" 맥키부인이 물었다.

“Mrs. Eberhardt. She goes around looking at people’s feet in their own homes.”

"에버하르트부인이야. 그녀는 평소에도 가게 손님들에게 그러고 다닌다지."

“I like your dress,” remarked Mrs. McKee, “I think it’s adorable.”

"당신의 드레스가 맘에 꼭 들어요." 맼키부인이 말했다. "정말 사랑스러워요."

Mrs. Wilson rejected the compliment by raising her eyebrow in disdain.

윌슨부인은 그런 말 하지 말라는 듯 경멸조로 눈썹을 치켜들었다. 

“It’s just a crazy old thing,” she said. “I just slip it on sometimes when I don’t care what I look like.”

"이것은 구닥다리일 뿐이예요." 그녀가 말했다. "난 어떻게 보일지 신경쓸 필요가 없을 때만 이걸 입을 뿐이죠."

“But it looks wonderful on you, if you know what I mean,” pursued Mrs. McKee.

"내 말은 그 옷이 당신에게는 아주 잘 어울린다는거예요." 맥키부인은 작정한 듯이 말했다.   

 “If Chester could only get you in that pose I think he could make something of it.”

"체스터가 당신의 그 모습을 찍을 수만 있다면, 아마도 굉장할 거예요."

We all looked in silence at Mrs. Wilson, who removed a strand of hair from over her eyes and looked back at us with a brilliant smile.

우리 모두는 할 말을 잊고 윌슨 부인을 쳐다보았다. 그녀는 이마 위로 내려온 머리칼을 옆으로 넘기면서, 함박 웃음을 지으며 우리를 마주 보았다. 

Mr. McKee regarded her intently with his head on one side, and then moved his hand back and forth slowly in front of his face.

맥키씨는 머리를 한 쪽으로 기울이고 그녀를 유심히 뚫어지듯 바라보았다. 그리고 나서 그의 얼굴 앞에 손을 펴서 천천히 전후로 움직여 보았다.  

“I should change the light,” he said after a moment. “I’d like to bring out the modelling of the features. And I’d try to get hold of all the back hair.”

"조명을 바꾸어 봐야겠어요." 잠시 시간이 흐른 후에 그가 말했다. "이목구비의 음영아 뚜렷하면 더 좋을 것 같군요. 뒷 머리칼을 모두 한 데 잡아보세요."

“I wouldn’t think of changing the light,” cried Mrs. McKee. “I think it’s——”

"조명까지 바꿀 필요는 없잖아요." 맥키 부인이 외쳤다. "난 그저--"

Her husband said “SH!” and we all looked at the subject again, whereupon Tom Buchanan yawned audibly and got to his feet.

그녀의 남편이 "쉿!" 하고 말했다. 그리고 우리 모두는 다시 주인공을 쳐다 보았는데, 그 장면에서 톰부캐넌은 들으라는 듯이 소리내어 하품을 하고서는 일어섰다.

“You McKees have something to drink,” he said. “Get some more ice and mineral water, Myrtle, before everybody goes to sleep.”

"맥키 당신 마실 것 가지고 있지." 그가 말했다. "머틀, 얼음와 광천수 좀 가지고 와, 모두가 지루해서 나가떨어지기 전에 말이야."

“I told that boy about the ice.” Myrtle raised her eyebrows in despair at the shiftlessness of the lower orders. “These people! You have to keep after them all the time.”

"벌써 엘리베이트보이에게 말해 놨어요." 이런 하찮은 말에 따를 수 밖에 없는 처지에 기가 막혀 머틀이 눈썹을 치켜올렸다.  "언제까지 당신은 이 사람들에게 큰소리만 칠거예요."

<위대한 개츠비 The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald>

톰과 윌슨부인의 강권으로 결국 캐러웨이는 톰과 윌슨부인의 비밀처소에 가게됩니다. 집에 도착하자 윌슨 부인은 아주 도도하게 주인행세를 합니다. 엘레베이터 소년도 윌슨부인의 도도함에 많이 당한 모양입니다.

아파트 방에 있는 가구나 탁자에 놓인 잡지, 책등은 그녀의 취향을 보여줍니다. 고상함과는 거리가 있군요. 더구나 그녀의 여동생(언니가 아닌 것 같네요)도 천박한 분위기가 물씬 풍깁니다. 이런 여자를 아름답다고 하니, 보는 눈도 가지 가지네요. 

이 부분에서는 윌슨부인과 그의 여동생의 성향등이 어떻게 표현되었는지 유의하면 재미있을 것 같습니다.

We went on, cutting back again over the Park toward the West Hundreds.

우리는 쭉 가다가 센트럴 파크를 지나 길을 바꾸어 웨스트 헌드레즈쪽으로 향했다.  

 At 158th Street the cab stopped at one slice in a long white cake of apartment-houses.

택시는 158번가에 이르러 하얀 공동주택들이 길게 늘어선 구역중 한 부분에 멈추었다. 

 Throwing a regal homecoming glance around the neighborhood, Mrs. Wilson gathered up her dog and her other purchases, and went haughtily in.

윌슨 부인은 망명생활을 마치고 귀국하는 왕이 고국을 바라보듯이 주위를 돌아보고는, 강아지와 다른 구입물들을 들고서 턱을 치켜들고 안으로 들어갔다.  

“I’m going to have the McKees come up,” she announced as we rose in the elevator. “And, of course, I got to call up my sister, too.”

"맥키네를 오라고 할거예요" 우리가 엘리베이터를 타고 올라갈 때 그녀가 내뱉었다. "물론 내 동생도 부를거구요."

The apartment was on the top floor — a small living-room, a small dining-room, a small bedroom, and a bath.

그 방은 맨 위층에 있었다. 거기에는 작은 거실, 작은 식당방, 작은 침실, 그리고 작은 욕조가 있었다.

The living-room was crowded to the doors with a set of tapestried furniture entirely too large for it, so that to move about was to stumble continually over scenes of ladies swinging in the gardens of Versailles.

거실은 한 세트의 가구들로 꽉 차 있었는데, 그 가구들은 하나같이 방에 비해 너무 컸다. 그 가구들에는 베르사이유 정원에서 그네를 타고 있는 아가씨들의 모습이 그려져 있었는데, 조금 움직일 때마다 그 풍경들이 발에 채였다.  

The only picture was an over-enlarged photograph, apparently a hen sitting on a blurred rock.

그림은 달랑 하나만 걸려 있었는데, 그것은 너무 확대시키는 바람에 불분명해 보이는 사진이었다. 그것은 분명 암탉으로 보이는 것이 흐릿해 보이는 바위위에 앉아 있는 사진이었다.  

Looked at from a distance, however, the hen resolved itself into a bonnet, and the countenance of a stout old lady beamed down into the room.

그러나 멀리서 그 그림을 보면, 그 암닭은 보닛모자 속에 들어 앉아 있는 것 같이 보였다. 그리고 뚱뚱한 노파가 액자속에서 태연하게 방안을 내려다 보고 있었다. 

Several old copies ofTown Tattle lay on the table together with a copy of Simon Called Peter, and some of the small scandal magazines of Broadway.

탁자위에는 지나간 타운태틀 몇 부가 놓여 있었고, 그 옆에는 '사이몬 콜드 피터'라는 소설책 한 권과 브로드웨이의 소소한 스캔들을 실은 잡지들도 몇 부도 있었다.

Mrs. Wilson was first concerned with the dog.

윌슨 부인은 첫번째 관심사는 강아지였다. 

A reluctant elevator-boy went for a box full of straw and some milk, to which he added on his own initiative a tin of large, hard dog-biscuits — one of which decomposed apathetically in the saucer of milk all afternoon.

엘리베이터 소년은 윌슨 부인의 등살에 떠밀려 짚으로 채운 상자와 우유를 조금 가져 왔다. 그리고 덤으로 시키지도 않은, 크고 단단한 개먹이용 비스켓이 든 캔 하나를 더 가져왔는데, 비스켓 하나는 오후 내내 우유 접시에 내버려져 상한 냄새가 나고 있었다.  

Meanwhile Tom brought out a bottle of whiskey from a locked bureau door.

그 동안 톰은 잠겨진 옷장 문을 열고 위스키 한 병을 꺼내 가져왔다.

I have been drunk just twice in my life, and the second time was that afternoon; so everything that happened has a dim, hazy cast over it, although until after eight o’clock the apartment was full of cheerful sun.

나는 지금까지 딱 두 번 술에 취했었는데, 그 두번째가 그날 오후였다. 그래서 그날에는 8시가 되기까지 방이 훤했음에도 불구하고, 나에게는 그 날 일어났던 모든 일들이 가물 가물, 어렴풋하기만 하다.

Sitting on Tom’s lap Mrs. Wilson called up several people on the telephone; then there were no cigarettes, and I went out to buy some at the drugstore on the corner.

윌슨 부인은 톰의 무릎에 앉아서 전화로 몇 사람을 불러들이고 있을 때, 나는 모퉁이에 있는 가게에 담배를 사러 나갔다. 마침 담배가 없었던 것이다.

When I came back they had disappeared, so I sat down discreetly in the living-room and read a chapter of Simon Called Peter — either it was terrible stuff or the whiskey distorted things, because it didn’t make any sense to me.

내가 돌아왔을 때 그들은 보이지 않았다. 그래서 나는 거실에 조심스럽게 앉아서 소설 '사이몬 콜드 피터'의 첫 번째 장을 읽었다. 그것은 형편없는 쓰레기였다. 아니면 술때문에 내가 취해서 그렇게 보였는지도 모른다. 어쨌든 그것은 턱없는 이야기였다. 

Just as Tom and Myrtle (after the first drink Mrs. Wilson and I called each other by our first names) reappeared, company commenced to arrive at the apartment-door.

톰과 머틀(첫 술을 마신 뒤로 윌슨과 나는 서로의 이름으로 불렀다.)이 다시 나타났을 때 막 친구들이 도착하여 문을 두들겼다. 

The sister, Catherine, was a slender, worldly girl of about thirty, with a solid, sticky bob of red hair, and a complexion powdered milky white.

여동생 캐더린은 삼십쯤 되어 보이는, 호리호리하고 겉만 번지르르한 여자로, 굵은 머리칼을 머리에 붙인 빨간 단발머리에, 우유빛 분을 바른 얼굴을 하고 있었다.       

 Her eye-brows had been plucked and then drawn on again at a more rakish angle, but the efforts of nature toward the restoration of the old alignment gave a blurred air to her face.

그녀의 눈썹은 위로 비스듬히 당겨져 올라가다 꺽여지는 순간 더 날렵한 각도를 이루며 다시 아래를 향하고 있었다. 그러나 손 보기전의 자연스런 모양으로 되돌아가려는 기미가 강해서인지 그녀의 얼굴에는 애매한 분위기가 나타났다.     

When she moved about there was an incessant clicking as innumerable pottery bracelets jingled up and down upon her arms.

그녀가 돌아다닐 때면 팔에 걸린 수많은 도자기로 만든 팔찌가 아래 위로 쟁쟁거리며 내는 달가닥거리는 소리가 연방 들렸다.

She came in with such a proprietary haste, and looked around so possessively at the furniture that I wondered if she lived here.

주인이라도 되는 양 급히 들어와서 자기 소유라도 되는 것처럼 가구들을 둘러보는 통에 나는 그녀가 여기에 살고 있는 줄 알았다.  

But when I asked her she laughed immoderately, repeated my question aloud, and told me she lived with a girl friend at a hotel.

그러나 내가 물어 보니, 그녀는 터무니 없다는 듯이 웃으며, 큰소리로 내 말을 되풀이하였다. 그리고는 나에게 친구와 함께 호텔에 살고 있다고 말해 주었다.
