위대한 개츠비28 (3장)

개츠비는 언제부터 나옵니까? 아마 독자들의 마음 속에서는 이미 이런 항의가 꿈틀거리고 있을 것입니다. 아니나 다를까 이 시점에서 개츠비가 전면에 등장하긴 하지만 여전히 개츠비는 베일에 싸여 있습니다. 도대체 개츠비는 얼마나 부자일까요? 왜 그는 밤마다 엄청난 파티를 여는 것일까요?

 

개츠비의 저택에서 벌어지는 여름밤 파티는 그야말로 시끌벅적 대성황을 이룹니다. 개츠비는 성대한 파티를 위해 아낌없이 돈을 쏟아 붓습니다. 손님들은 이유도 모르는 채 개츠비의 파티를 즐깁니다.  

 

개츠비가 어떤 사람인지 더욱 궁금해집니다. <위대한 개츠비>를 읽는 독자들은 궁금증이 시원하게 풀렸으면 하고 바라겠지만, 여전히 그 해답을 찾기 위해 <위대한 개츠비>를 손에서 뗄 수가 없습니다.

 

어쨌든 개츠비의 성대한 파티를 한 번 들여다 볼까요?

There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer nights.

이웃 집으로부터 음악 소리가 여름밤을 가로질러 들려왔다.

 

In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.

그의 푸른 정원에서는 여기 저기 속삭이는 소리, 진한 샴페인 향기, 얼굴이 잘 알려진 스타들 사이로 남녀들이 나방처럼 떠돌아다니고 있었다. 

 

At high tide in the afternoon I watched his guests diving from the tower of his raft, or taking the sun on the hot sand of his beach while his two motor-boats slit the waters of the Sound, drawing aquaplanes over cataracts of foam.

오후 만조때면 그의 모터보트 두대가 세찬 물거품위로 파도타기판을 끌면서 곶 부근의 바닷물을 가르며 달렸고, 손님들은 부표의 높은 곳에서 물에 뛰어들거나, 그의 해변에서 뜨거운 모래와 햇빛을 즐겼다.   

 

On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains.

주말이면 한 쪽에서는 역까지 왕복하는 4륜차가 활발히 움직이는 황색 곤충처럼 기차를 타고온 손님을 맞으러 헐레벌떡 왕복하고, 그의 롤스 로이스는, 아침 아홉시부터 자정이 훌쩍 지난 시간까지 도시에서 오는 일행, 그리고 돌아가는 일행을 태우고 수없이 왔다갔다 했다.   

 

 

 

And on Mondays eight servants, including an extra gardener, toiled all day with mops and scrubbing-brushes and hammers and garden-shears, repairing the ravages of the night before.

월요일이면 하인 여덟명이 별도의 정원사 한 명과 함께 하루종일 밀대와 빗자루, 망치, 정원용 가위를 가지고 지난 밤의 어질러진 참혹한 흔적을 수리하느라 진땀을 뺐다.

 

Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York — every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves.

금요일마다 뉴욕의 청과상이 보낸 오렌지와 레몬 다섯 상자가 도착했고, 월요일이면 과육이 다 빠져 반쪽이 된 바로 그 오렌지와 레몬이 산더미를 이룬채 뒷문에 놓여졌다. 

 

 

There was a machine in the kitchen which could extract the juice of two hundred oranges in half an hour if a little button was pressed two hundred times by a butler’s thumb.

집사의 엄지손가락이 이백번이나 반복해서 작은 버튼을 누를 수만 있다면, 단 삼십분에 이백개의 오렌지로부터 주스를 추출할 수 있는 기계가 부엌에 있었던 것이다.

 

 

 

At least once a fortnight a corps of caterers came down with several hundred feet of canvas and enough colored lights to make a Christmas tree of Gatsby’s enormous garden.

적어도 이주일에 한 번은 일단의 연회업자가 수백 피트짜리 캔버스천과 수많은 형형색색의 전구를 가지고 와서 개츠비의 거대한 정원에 크리스마스 트리를 만들었다.

 

On buffet tables, garnished with glistening hors-d’oeuvre, spiced baked hams crowded against salads of harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys bewitched to a dark gold.

음식이 놓여 있는 테이블마다, 아름답게 꾸민 전채요리가 눈부시고, 어릿광대의 모습을 한 샐러드와 마법에 걸린 듯 짙은 황금색을 띤 돼지와 칠면조 모양의 패스트리, 그리고 양념이 잘 된 구운 햄이 그득하였다.  

 

 

In the main hall a bar with a real brass rail was set up, and stocked with gins and liquors and with cordials so long forgotten that most of his female guests were too young to know one from another.

큰 홀에 만들어진 바에는 황동으로 된 가로장이 있어서, 대부분의 젊은 여자 손님들이 무엇이 무엇인지 구별할 수 조차 없는 잊혀진지 오래된 진과 위스키,그리고 과일주스로 가득 채웠졌다. 

 

 

 

By seven o’clock the orchestra has arrived, no thin five-piece affair, but a whole pitful of oboes and trombones and saxophones and viols and cornets and piccolos, and low and high drums.

7시까지는 악단이 도착했다. 그것은 5명으로 된 소규모 악단이 아니었다. 오보에, 트럼본, 색스폰, 비올라, 코르넷, 피콜로, 그리고 각종 드럼을 포함해서 악단석을 가득 채운 대규모 악단이었다.

 

 

The last swimmers have come in from the beach now and are dressing up-stairs; the cars from New York are parked five deep in the drive, and already the halls and salons and verandas are gaudy with primary colors, and hair shorn in strange new ways, and shawls beyond the dreams of Castile.

수영하던 사람들도 한사람 빠짐없이 해변으로부터 돌아와서, 옷을 차려 입고 계단마다 앉아있었다. 차도에는 뉴욕에서 온 차들이 다섯겹으로 주차하고, 이미 홀, 살롱, 베란다는 진한 원색으로, 최신 유행의 특이한 형태의 머리 스타일로, 그리고 스페인 카스티아의왕국의 아름다움도 미치지 못할 아름다운 숄로 현란함이 넘친다.

 

 

 

The bar is in full swing, and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside, until the air is alive with chatter and laughter, and casual innuendo and introductions forgotten on the spot, and enthusiastic meetings between women who never knew each other’s names. 

바는 활기로 가득하고, 정원 바깥에는 음료를 나르느라 오고가는 모습과 함께 재잘대는 소리와 웃음소리가 끊이지 않는다. 서로의 이름조차 알지 못하는 여자들이 흥에 겨워 만남을 즐거워하고, 서로를 격의없이 소개하고는 돌아서자마자 잊어버리는 둥 분위기는 한껏 달아 오른다.
