<위대한 개츠비 The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald>

 

이제 세명의 남자와 여자가 모여 앉은 테이블에서는 개츠비에 대한 뒷이야기가 무성합니다.이런 성대하면서도 자유로운 파티를 주최한 주인장인 개츠비를 어떻게 생각하고 있을까요?

It was for Lucille, too.

그것은 루실은 위한 것이었다.

 

"I like to come," Lucille said. "I never care what I do, so I always have a good time. 

"나는 오고 싶었어요," 루실이 말했다. "나는 내가 무엇을 하든 개의치 않죠. 그래서 난 항상 즐겁게 보내죠."

 

When I was here last I tore my gown on a chair, and he asked me my name and address-inside of a week I got a package from Croirier's with a new evening gown in it."

지난 번 여기에 왔을 때 의자에 걸려 가운이 찢어졌었어요. 그가 내 이름과 주소를 묻더군요.  일주일도 안되어 새 이브닝 가운이 들어있는 소포를 크로이리어 가게로부터 받았어요. 

 

"Did you keep it?" asked Jordan.

"그걸 받았니?" 조단이 물었다. 

 

 

"Sure I did. I was going to wear it to-night, but it was too big in the bust and had to be altered.

"물론이죠. 나는 오늘밤 그걸 입으려고요. 그런데 가슴 부분이 너무 커서 좀 손을 보아야 했어요."

 

 It was gas blue with lavender beads. Two hundred and sixty-five dollars." 그것은 놀랍게도 연보라색 구슬이 달린 파란색 옷이었어요. 이백 육십 오달러짜리."

 

 

"There's something funny about a fellow that'll do a thing like that," said the other girl eagerly.

"그런 행동을 할 사람이라면 그 사람 좀 의심스러운데가 있는데." 다른 소녀가 열을 내며 말했다. 

 

 "He doesn't want any trouble with anybody."

"그는 누구라도 곤란한 입장에 처하길 바라지 않는거야."

 

 

"Who doesn't?" I inquired.

"누굴 말하는 거야?" 나는 물었다. 

 

 

"Gatsby. Somebody told me-"

"개츠비말이예요. 누군가가 나에게 그러던데..."

 

The two girls and Jordan leaned together confidentially.

두명의 소녀와 조던은 허물없는 사이인 것처럼 서로  머리를 맞대었다.

 

"Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once." A thrill passed over all of us. 

"누군가가 그러던데... 다들 예전에 그가 사람을 죽였다들 생각한다고." 우리 모두 소름이 좌악 돋았다.

 

The three Mr. Mumbles bent forward and listened eagerly.

세명의 모모씨는 몸을 앞으로 기울여 진지하게 들었다.  

 

"I don't think it's so much that," argued Lucille sceptically; "it's more that he was a German spy during the war."

"그건 그렇지 않아요." 루실이 의심스럽다는 듯이 말을 받았다. "차라리 전쟁중에 독일 스파이였다면 모를까." 

 

One of the men nodded in confirmation.

남자들 중 한 사람이 맞다고 고개를 끄덕였다. 

 

 

"I heard that from a man who knew all about him, grew up with him in Germany," he assured us positively.

"그와 함께 독일에서 자랐기때문에 모든 걸 아는 사람한테서 그런 말을 나도 들었어요." 그는 자신있게 확언했다.

 

 

"Oh, no," said the first girl, "it couldn't be that, because he was in the American army during the war." 

"아니, 아니예요," 첫번째 소녀가 말했다, "그럴리가 없어요. 왜냐하면 전쟁중에 그는 미국군이었는데요."

 

As our credulity switched back to her she leaned forward with enthusiasm. 다시 그녀의 말에 무게중심이 옮겨지자, 그녀는 신이 나서 몸을 앞으로 기울였다. 

 

"You look at him sometimes when he thinks nobody's looking at him. I'll bet he killed a man."

"아무도 자기를 보는 사람이 없다고 생각하고 있는 순간의 그를 한 번 보세요. 장담컨데, 사람을 죽인게 맞아요."
