<위대한 개츠비>

 

뜨거운 여름, 더구나 습도가 높아 옷이 쩍쩍 달라 붙는 무더위는 사람을 잡습니다.

시원한 마실 것 조차 그 더위와 그들 사이의 긴장을 늦출 수는 없는가 봅니다.

그들은 돌파구가 필요한 듯 합니다. 데이지가 시내로 나가자고 제안하는군요....

Gatsby took up his drink.

개츠비가 그의 잔을 들어 올렸다. 

 

 

"They certainly look cool," he said, with visible tension.

"정말 시원해 보이는군요," 개츠비는 긴장한 기색이 아직 가시지 않은 모습이었다. 

 

 

We drank in long greedy swallows.

우리는 한 번도 입을 떼지 않고 음료를 쭉 들여 마셨다. 

 

 

"I read somewhere that the sun's getting hotter every year," said Tom genially.

"해마다 태양이 점점 더 뜨거워진다고 하더군." 톰이 진지하게 말했다.

 

 

 "It seems that pretty soon the earth's going to fall into the sun--or wait a minute--it's just the opposite--the sun's getting colder
every year.

"언젠가는 지구가 태양속으로 빨려 들 지도 몰라. 아니... 잠깐만. 그 반대로군. 해마다 태양이 점점 식어가고 있다지."

 

 

"Come outside," he suggested to Gatsby, "I'd like you to have a look at the place."

"밖으로 나갑시다," 톰이 개츠비에게 제안했다. "보여 주고 싶은 곳이 있소."

 

 

I went with them out to the veranda.

나는 그들과 함께 베란다로 나갔다.

 

On the green Sound, stagnant in the heat,  one small sail crawled slowly toward the fresher sea.

열기에 감싸인 초록색 곶에는 작은 돛단 배 하나가 시원하게 탁 트인 바다를 향해 천천히 움직이고 있었다. 

 

 

 Gatsby's eyes followed it momentarily; he raised his hand and pointed across the bay.

개츠비의 눈은 잠깐 그것을 쫓았다.  그리고 그는 손을 들어 만 너머 저쪽을 가리켰다. 

 

 

"I'm right across from you."

"내가 바로 저 건너편에 살죠."

 

"So you are."

"그렇죠."

 

 

Our eyes lifted over the rosebeds and the hot lawn and the weedy refuse of the dog days along shore.

우리의 눈은 장미가 활짝 핀 화단, 그 너머 열기가 느껴지는 잔디밭, 그리고 더 멀리 있는 해안을 따라 뜨거운 태양아래 누워있는 잡초가 우거진 쓰레기더미를 스쳐지나갔다.  

 

 

Slowly the white wings of the boat moved against the blue cool limit of the sky.

시원하게 펼쳐진 푸른 수평선을 배경으로 하얀 날개를 펼친 배가 천천히 움직였다.  

 

 

Ahead lay the scalloped ocean and the abounding blessed isles.

그 앞에는 많은 섬들이 평화롭게 누어있는 바다가 부채꼴로 펼쳐져 있었다.  

 

 

"There's sport for you," said Tom, nodding. "I'd like to be out there with him for about an hour."

"보여줄 게 있소." 톰이 머리를 까닥거리며 말했다. "한시간쯤 그와 함께 좀 나갔다 올께." 

 

 

We had luncheon in the dining-room, darkened, too, against the heat, and drank down nervous gayety with the cold ale.

식당방 역시 더위 때문에 어둡게 해 놓았었는데, 우리는 거기서 간단히 점심을 먹고, 유쾌하게 차가운 맥주를 마셨다. 하지만 긴장의 끈은 여전히 팽팽했다.  

 

 

"What'll we do with ourselves this afternoon," cried Daisy, "and the day after that, and the next thirty years?"

"오늘 오후에 뭘 하면 좋을까?" 데이지가 큰 소리로 말했다, "그리고 내일은, 그리고 아직 남아 있는 우리의 30년을 어떻게 보내지?"

 

 

"Don't be morbid," Jordan said. "Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall."

"너무 그러지 말자," 조단이 말했다. "가을이 되고 날씨가 서늘해지면 그 땐 다시 인생이 살만 할 거야."

 

 

"But it's so hot," insisted Daisy, on the verge of tears, "And everything's so confused. Let's all go to town!"

"그래도 이건 너무 더워," 데이지는 하품으로 눈물이 그렁그렁했다. "모든 게 정말 혼란스러워. 모두 시내로 나가자!"
