<위대한 개츠비>

데이지의 집에 초대를 받은 개츠비,

개츠비와 톰 사이에는 표현되지 않은 적대감이 팽팽하게 감돌고 있다.

더구나 개츠비를 바라 보는 데이지를 보고서 톰은 분노로 불타오른다.

Her voice struggled on through the heat, beating against it, moulding its senselessness into forms.

그녀의 목소리는 후덥지근한 열기속에 애닯게 들렸지만, 그래도 열기를 물리치면서 자신의 존재를 뚜렷히 보이고 있었다. 

 

"I've heard of making a garage out of a stable," Tom was saying to Gatsby, "but I'm the first man who ever made a stable out of a garage."

"마굿간을 차고로 바꿨다면서요" 톰이 개츠비에게 말했댜. "그러나 차고를 마굿간으로 만든 사람은 내가 처음 일거요,"

 

"Who wants to go to town?" demanded Daisy insistently. Gatsby's eyes floated toward her. "Ah," she cried, "you look so cool."

"시내로 나가고 싶은 사람?" 데이지가 또 그 말을 꺼냈다. 개츠비의 눈은 허공을 지나 그녀에게로 향했다. "아! 당신 정말 멋지군요." 그녀가 외쳤다.  

 

Their eyes met, and they stared together at each other, alone in space.

그들의 눈이 마주치자 그들은 공간속에 그들만 댕그러니 있는 듯 서로를 뚫어지게 바라 보았다. 

With an effort she glanced down at the table. "You always look so cool," she repeated.

데이지는 간신히 눈을 내리 깔고 테이블을 바라보았다. "당신은 언제나 정말 멋져 보여요." 그녀가 다시 말했다.

 

She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw.

데이지는 개츠비를 사랑한다고 말했다. 그리고 톰 부캐넌이 보았다.

 

He was astounded. His mouth opened a little and he looked at Gatsby and then back at Daisy as if he had just recognized her as some one he knew a
long time ago.

톰은 놀랐다. 톰은 멍하니 입을 벌리고 개츠비를 보았다. 그리고 다시 데이지를 번갈아 보았다. 마치 데이지가 오래전에 알았던 사람인 걸 이제 막 알아 차린 듯....

 

 

"You resemble the advertisement of the man," she went on innocently.

"당신은 광고에 나오는 남자처럼 보여요," 데이지는 천진스럽게 말을 이었다.

"You know the advertisement of the man----"

"광고에 나오는 멋진 남자 말이죠."

 

"All right," broke in Tom quickly, "I'm perfectly willing to go to town. Come on--we're all going to town."

"좋아" 톰이 재빨리 끼어들었다, "그래 우리 시내로 나가자. 자 어서....우리 모두 시내로 가자."

 

He got up, his eyes still flashing between Gatsby and his wife.

그는 일어섰지만, 그의 눈은 여전히 개츠비와 그의 아내를 번득거리는 눈으로 보았다. 

No one moved.

아무도 움직이지 않았다.

 

"Come on!" His temper cracked a little. "What's the matter, anyhow? If we're going to town let's start."

"자 어서!" 톰은 조금 성질이 났다. "무슨 일이야? 시내에 갈거면 빨리 서둘러야지." 

 

His hand, trembling with his effort at self control, bore to his lips the last of his glass of ale.

잔에 남은 맥주를 마져 벌컥 들어 마시는 톰은 손은 억눌린 분노로 파르르 떨리고 있었다. 

 

Daisy's voice got us to our feet and out on to the blazing gravel drive.

데이지가 말하자 그제서야 우리는 일어서서 햇살이 번뜩이는 도로위로 나섰다. 

 

"Are we just going to go?" she objected. "Like this? Aren't we going to let any one smoke a cigarette first?"

"그냥 갈 거예요?" 데이지가 반발했다. "그냥 이렇게요? 먼저 담배 한 대 피우고 나가지 않을래요?"

 

"Everybody smoked all through lunch."

"모두들 점심 먹는 내내 담배를 피웠잖아."

 

"Oh, let's have fun," she begged him. "It's too hot to fuss."

"그래도 한 대만 더 피자." 데이지가 톰에게 애원하듯 말했다. "이렇게 더운데 뭐 그렇게 나가려고 안달이야."

 

He didn't answer.

톰은 아무 말 하지 않았다. 

 

"Have it your own way," she said. "Come on, Jordan."

"그럼 당신 뜻대로 합시다." 데이지가 말했다. "자 서둘러. 조단." 

 

They went upstairs to get ready while we three men stood there shuffling the hot pebbles with our feet.

데이지와 조단은 외출을 준비하러 위층으로 올라갔을 때, 남은 우리 셋은 하릴 없이 어색하게 뜨겁게 달구어진 자갈돌만 자근자근 밟고 있었다. 

 

A silver curve of the moon hovered already in the western sky.

서쪽 하늘에는 이미 은빛 초생달이 떠 있었다.
