<위대한 개츠비>

윌슨의 이웃인 마이클리스는

머틀이 죽던 밤 윌슨과 함께 있으면서 그를 위로하기 위해 애를 씁니다.

밤새 윌슨은 멍하게 무언가에 골몰해 있습니다.

마침내 윌슨은 누가 자기 아내를 죽였는지 알아냈다고 선언합니다..

Michaelis made a clumsy attempt to distract him.

마이클리스는 윌슨의 주의를 딴 곳으로 돌리려 하였지만 그는 이런 일에 아주 서툴렀다.  

"How long have you been married, George?

"조지, 결혼한 지가 얼마나 되었지?"

Come on there, try and sit still a minute and answer my question.

자, 어서. 좀 가만히 앉아서 대답 좀 해 봐. 

How long have you been married?"

결혼한 지 얼마나 되었냐고?

"Twelve years."

"12년."

"Ever had any children? Come on, George, sit still--I asked you a question.

"아이는 없고? 자, 조지, 좀 가만히 있어봐, 내가 묻고 있잖아.

Did you ever have any children?"

애는 없어?"

The hard brown beetles kept thudding against the dull light and whenever
Michaelis heard a car go tearing along the road outside it sounded to him
like the car that hadn't stopped a few hours before.

딱딱한 갈색 장수벌레가 흐릿한 전구에 계속 부딪히고 있었다. 바깥 도로에 생생 달리는 차 소리가 들릴 때마다 마이클리스의 귀에는 몇 시간전 사고를 내고도  

멈추지 않았던 그 차 소리가 들렸다. 

He didn't like to go into the garage because the work bench was stained where the body had
been lying so he moved uncomfortably around the office--

마이클리스는 차고 속으로 들어가고 싶지 않았다. 시체가 놓였던 긴 의자에 얼룩이 져 있었기 때문이다. 그래서 그는 불편하지만 사무실 주위를 둘러 다녔다.  

he knew every object in it before morning--

덕분에 날이 밝아 올 때쯤에는 그 안에 어떤 물건들이 있는지 모조리 알게 되었다.  

and from time to time sat down beside Wilson trying to keep him more quiet.

그리고 그는 때때로 윌슨 옆에 앉아서 그를 진정시키려고 무던히도 애썼다. 

"Have you got a church you go to sometimes, George?

"때때로 교회는 나간적이 있지, 조지?

Maybe even if you haven't been there for a long time?

아마도 오랫동안 가지는 않았겠지만 말이야.

Maybe I could call up the church and get a priest to come over and he could talk to you, see?"

교회에 연락을 해서 목사님을 오게 해서 이야기를 좀 들어 볼래?"

"Don't belong to any."

"교회에 나간 적이 없어."

"You ought to have a church, George, for times like this.

"교회에 다녔어야지, 조지, 이런 때를 위해서라도 말이야.

You must have gone to church once.

한 번쯤은 교회에 간 적이 있겠지.

Didn't you get married in a church?

교회에서 결혼식을 올리지 않았나?

Listen, George, listen to me. Didn't you get married in a church?"

내 말 들려, 조지, 내 말 좀 들어봐, 결혼식을 교회에서 올리지 않았어?"

"That was a long time ago."

"오래 전 일이야."

The effort of answering broke the rhythm of his rocking--for a moment he
was silent.

대답을 하려 애쓰는 통에 끈질기게 앞뒤로 흔들리던 움직임의 흐름이 흔들렸다. 잠시 정적이 흘렀다.

Then the same half knowing, half bewildered look came back into his faded eyes.

그러다가 반은 아는 둥, 반은 혼란스러운 듯한 표정이 생기가 꺼진 눈동자에 다시 나타났다.

"Look in the drawer there," he said, pointing at the desk.

"저기 서랍속을 봐." 윌슨이 책상을 가리키며 말했다.

"Which drawer?"

"어떤 서랍?"

"That drawer--that one."

"저 서랍- 저기"

Michaelis opened the drawer nearest his hand.

마이클리스는 손을 내밀어 가장 가까운 서랍을 열었다.

There was nothing in it but a small expensive dog leash made of leather and braided silver.

거기에는 가죽과 은으로 꼰 작지만 비싼 개 목줄 외에는 아무 것도 없었다. 

It was apparently new.

그건 분명히 새것이었다.

"This?" he inquired, holding it up.

"이것?" 마이클리스는 그것을 들고서 물었다.

Wilson stared and nodded.

윌슨은 노려보더니 고개를 끄덕였다.

"I found it yesterday afternoon.

"어제 오후에 발견했어.

She tried to tell me about it but I knew it was something funny."

여편네가 나에게 그것에 대해 해명하려 애썼지만, 그것은 우스운 짓이었지."

"You mean your wife bought it?"

"당신 아내가 그걸 샀다는 말이야?"

"She had it wrapped in tissue paper on her bureau."

"여편네는 그걸 화장지로 싸서 장롱위에 놓아두었더구만."

Michaelis didn't see anything odd in that and he gave Wilson a dozen reasons why his wife might have bought the dog leash.

마이클리스는 그것이 뭐가 이상한 지 알 수가 없었다. 그는 윌슨에서 그의 아내가 그 개 목줄을 뭐 때문에 샀겠느냐며 열댓가지나 되는 이유를 들었다.

But conceivably Wilson had heard some of these same explanations before, from Myrtle, because he began saying "Oh, my God!" again in a whisper--

his comforter left several explanations in the air.

하지만 분명히 윌슨은 머틀로부터 이와 같은 해명을 들었을 것이다. 윌슨은 아내가 생각난 듯 작은 목소리로 다시 "오 하느님"하고 말하기 시작했다. 

마이클리스가 위로하듯 몇 마디 더 했지만 그것은 윌슨의 귀에 들리지 않았다.

"Then he killed her," said Wilson.

"그놈이 죽였어." 윌슨이 말했다.

His mouth dropped open suddenly.

마이클리스는 갑자기 입이 딱 벌어졌다.
