위대한 개츠비

더위와 무료함을 참지 못한 톰과 데이지 일행은 뉴욕을 향해 출발합니다.

데이지와 함께 개츠비가 먼저 출발하고, 조단과 닉을 태운 톰은 윌슨의 집에서 기름을 주유합니다.

그리고 닉과 톰은 윌슨 머틀의 광기어린 시선을 느낍니다.

주유소를 떠난 톰은 데이지를 영원히 잃어버릴 것 같은 조급함에 속도를 높입니다.

That locality was always vaguely disquieting, even in the broad glare of afternoon, and now I turned my head as though I had been warned of something behind.

그 곳에는 항상 뭔지 모를 불안이 감돌았다. 심지어 백주 대낮에도 말이다. 방금도 나는 뒤에서 뭔가 경고하는 소리를 들은 것처럼 뒤 돌아 보았다. 

 

Over the ashheaps the giant eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg kept their vigil but I perceived, after a moment, that other eyes were regarding us with peculiar

intensity from less than twenty feet away.

잿더미 위로 닥터 T.J 에클버그의 커다란 눈이 부릅뜨고 있었다. 그러나 나는 곧 채 이십피트도 떨어져 있지 않는 곳에서 또 다른 눈이 우리를 강렬하게 쏘아 보고 있다는 것을 깨달았다. 

 

In one of the windows over the garage the curtains had been moved aside a little and Myrtle Wilson was peering down at the car.

차고위의 있는 창문에서 커튼이 살짝 젖혀져 있었고, 머틀 윌슨이 차가 있는 아래쪽을 노려보고 있었다.   

 

So engrossed was she that she had no consciousness of being observed and one emotion after another crept into her face like objects into a slowly
developing picture.

어찌나 집중하고 있었든지 누가 보고 있다는 사실조차 전혀 눈치채지 못하고 있었다. 머틀의 감정의 변화는 조금씩 그녀의 얼굴에 드러났다. 마치 사진을 현상할 때 그 속에 서서이 형체를 드러내는 물체처럼 말이다. 

 

Her ｅxpression was curiously familiar--it was an ｅxpression I had often seen on women's faces but on Myrtle Wilson's face it seemed purposeless and

inexplicable until I realized that her eyes, wide with jealous terror, were fixed not on Tom, but on Jordan Baker, whom she took to be his wife.

그 표정을 희안하게 낯 익었다. 그것은 내가 종종 여자들의 얼굴에서 보았던 그런 표정이었다. 그러나 머틀 윌슨의 얼굴에 나타난 그 표정은 무엇때문인지 전혀 알수가 없었다. 하지만 질투에 찬 두려움으로 커진 그녀의 눈이 톰에게가 아니라 조단 베이커에게 고정되어 있다는 것을 깨달았을 때에야 그 표정을 이해할 수 있었다. 머틀은 조단을 톰의 아내로 착각했던 것이다.  

There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind, and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic.

단순한 마음의 혼란과도 같은 혼란은 없는 법이다. 우리가 차를 타고 떠날 때, 톰은 뜨거운 공포의 채찍질을 느끼고 있었다.  

 

His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control.

한 시간 전까지만 해도 안전하고 서로 침범하지 않았던 톰의 아내와 톰의 여자, 이제는 갑자기 그의 통제로 부터 미끄러지며 빠져나가고 있었다.

 

Instinct made him step on the accelerator with the double purpose of overtaking Daisy and leaving Wilson behind, and we sped along toward Astoria at fifty miles an hour, until, among the spidery girders of the elevated, we came in sight of the easygoing blue coup챕.

톰은 본능적으로 엑셀레이터를 밟았다. 데이지를 따라 잡아야 되겠다는 생각도 있었지만, 윌슨으로부터 멀리 떨어지려는 목적도 있었다. 우리는 아스토리아를 향해 시속 50 마일로 달렸다. 그리고 마침내 거미다리처럼 가느다란 고가도로 위에서 태평스럽게 달리고 있는 파란색 쿠페를 발견했다. 

 

"Those big movies around Fiftieth Street are cool," suggested Jordan.

"50번가 거리에 있는 저 큰 영화관들이 참 멋지지 않아요." 조단이 영화를 보자는 듯 말했다. 

"I love New York on summer afternoons when every one's away.

"난 인적이 드문 여름날 오후의 뉴욕이 마음에 꼭 들어요.

 

There's something very sensuous about it--overripe, as if all sorts of funny fruits were going to fall into your hands."

뭔가 매우 관능적인 것이 있어요. 너무 익었다고나 할까, 마치 가지각색의 종류의 야릇한 과일들이 손에 떨어질 것 같은 그런 관능 말이예요."

 

The word "sensuous" had the effect of further disquieting Tom but before he could invent a protest the coup챕 came to a stop and Daisy signalled us
to draw up alongside.

"관능적"이란 말은 톰을 더 불안하게 만들었다. 그러나 톰이 대꾸하기도 전에 쿠페가 멈추었다. 그리고 데이지가 우리에게 손짓으로 길가에 서도록 했다.  

 

"Where are we going?" she cried.

"우리 어디 가는거야?" 데이지가 소리쳤다.

 

"How about the movies?"

"영화보는 건 어때?"

 

"It's so hot," she complained. "You go. We'll ride around and meet you after."

"너무 더워." 데이지가 불평했다. 당신이나 가. 우리는 차를 타고 돌아 다닐거야, 그리고 나중에 만나."

 

With an effort her wit rose faintly, "We'll meet you on some corner. I'll be the man smoking two cigarettes."

유머를 구사한다는 게 다 이 모양이다. "우리 어디 모서리에서 만나. 내가 담배 두대를 물고 있을께."

 

"We can't argue about it here," Tom said impatiently as a truck gave out a cursing whistle behind us.

"여기서 이러고 있을 시간이 없어." 톰은 급하게 말했다. 트럭이 우리 뒤에서 욕질하듯이 경적을 울리고 있었기 때문이었다. 

 

"You follow me to the south side of Central Park, in front of the Plaza."

"센트럴 파크 남쪽으로 나를 따라 와. 광장 앞으로."

 

Several times he turned his head and looked back for their car, and if the traffic delayed them he slowed up until they came into sight.

톰은 여러번 뒤 고개를 돌려 데이지가 탄 차가 잘 따라 오고 있는 지 돌아 보았다. 교통 때문에 밀려 그들이 보이지 않으면 그들이 시야에 들어 올 때까지 속도를 늦추었다.

 

I think he was afraid they would dart down a side street and out of his life forever.

내 생각에 그는 그들이 옆 길로 빠져나가 영원히 그의 인생에서 사라져 버릴까 두려워하는 것 같았다.

 

But they didn't. And we all took the less explicable step of engaging the parlor of a suite in the Plaza Hotel.

그러나 그런 일은 일어나지 않았다. 우리 모두는 왜 그리로 향했는지 설명할 수는 없지만 어쨌든 플라자 호텔 스위트 룸의 응접실로 들어섰다.
